The Montana Central Railroad was built in 1886 and linked Great Falls, Helena and Butte. It was a spur off the mainline of The Great Northern Railroad that connected Minneapolis to Seattle.

Today the line is used primarily by fisherman that use it to access this stretch of river that is world famous for its fly fishing. It would make a great Rails-to-Trails Conservancy project since it has been abandoned for many years with the adjacent interstate being favored.
